Fly fishing can seem like an intimidating sport. Images from A River Runs Through it run through the mind, and you think to yourself “I can’t do this”. As it turns out, fly fishing can be boiled down to some very basic skills and understandings that anyone can grasp, and have fun in the process!

The Basics of Fly Fishing Explained

The basic premise is that the line itself is weighted, and is worked up and out of the rod by casting. Unlike spinner fishing, where the lure is the weight that is used to “load” the rod and throw your “artificial bait” to the water.

Generally, Fly Rods have pre-determined weights, or thicknesses, with matching line weights for best performance. The standard Fly Rod is a 5 weight (5wt). We have lots of options under Fly Rods.

Flies are imitations of insects in one of their life stages and vary by state, season, and elevation mostly. But the general insect types are Mayfly, Caddis fly, Stonefly, and true Flies.

A fly reel should more or less be sized to match the rod and line you’re using. Mid size Fly Reels are used for 4-6 weight rods generally. If you can, try to choose a Large Arbor reel, which has a larger circumference, therefore not crimping your fly line as much when it’s spooled.
